Applying for a DAFT residental permit is one of the fastest ways for U.S. entrepreneurs to establish a business and relocate to the Netherlands. While the process is generally more accessible than the standard Dutch self-employed residence permit, following the correct sequence of steps is essential for a smooth application.

This guide explains the main stages of the DAFT application process in a clear and practical order.

Step 1. Prepare Your Documents and Dutch Address

Start by preparing the basic documents required for your DAFT application and securing a Dutch address that can be used for official government correspondence and, where appropriate, business registration.

This may be:

  • a private rental address;

  • a friend's address;

  • an approved business or postal address provider.

Step 2. Complete the DAFT Application Form

Complete the IND application form together with the Antecedents Certificate.

At this stage, you may not yet have a:

  • V-number;

  • BSN;

  • KvK registration number.

These details can usually be provided later during the process.

Step 3. Submit the DAFT Application to the IND

Most U.S. citizens apply for DAFT after entering the Netherlands under the visa-free stay rules.

After submitting the application to the IND, the applicant will normally receive a V-number and further instructions from the IND.

Step 4. Visit the IND for Biometrics and Residence Endorsement Sticker

Using your V-number, schedule an appointment with the IND.

At this appointment, you will provide biometric data, present your U.S. passport, show proof of payment of the IND fee, and request a residence endorsement sticker, known as a verblijfssticker.

This sticker allows you to legally stay and work in the Netherlands while your DAFT application is being processed.

Step 5. Register with the Municipality and Obtain Your BSN

After receiving the residence endorsement sticker, you can register with your local municipality, known as the gemeente, to obtain your BSN.

You should normally bring your passport, residence endorsement sticker, rental agreement, landlord's permission to register at the address if required, apostilled birth certificate, and, where applicable, an apostilled marriage certificate or certificate confirming unmarried status.

Step 6. Create Your DigiD

After obtaining your BSN, you can apply for a DigiD account.

DigiD gives you secure online access to Dutch government services and is useful for tax, municipal, healthcare, and administrative matters.

Step 7. Register Your Business with the KvK

Register your business with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce, known as the KvK.

Depending on your situation, this may sometimes be done through alternative registration procedures available to new entrepreneurs. The KvK registration fee is €81.

After registration, you will receive your official KvK registration extract.

Step 8. Open a Business Bank Account

Once your business has been registered, open a business bank account in the name of your Dutch business.

The account does not necessarily have to be with a traditional Dutch bank. Business accounts with providers such as Bunq or Wise Business may be acceptable, provided the account is opened in the name of the registered business.

A personal bank account is generally not sufficient for DAFT financial documentation.

Step 9. Deposit the Required Investment

Deposit at least €4,500 into your Dutch business account.

This amount must remain available in the business account while your DAFT residence permit is valid, as it represents the required investment in your Dutch enterprise.

Step 10. Obtain an Opening Balance Sheet

After depositing the required investment, arrange for a Dutch accountant with BECON registration to prepare an opening balance sheet.

This document is an important part of the financial evidence submitted to the IND.

Step 11. Submit the Remaining Documents to the IND

Submit the remaining documents requested by the IND. These typically include:

  • the KvK registration extract;

  • proof of the €4,500 investment;

  • the opening balance sheet prepared by the accountant;

  • and any additional documents requested in your individual case.

As of 2026, many DAFT applications are processed within approximately 6 to 8 weeks, although timelines may vary depending on the case.

Step 12. Maintain Your DAFT Residence Permit

Receiving your DAFT residence permit is only the beginning.

To maintain and renew your permit, your business should remain active, properly registered, and financially compliant. In addition to maintaining the required investment, applicants may need to demonstrate that the business generates sufficient income to support their stay in the Netherlands.

In 2026, this income level is generally around €1,735 per month for a single applicant, although the applicable threshold may change over time.

Proper bookkeeping, tax compliance, active business operations, and timely renewal preparation are essential for maintaining DAFT status.
